9 Office Desk Essentials: Top Things Needed for Office Desks

For many Americans, the majority of our week is spent at a desk, which is why it’s so important to keep it stocked with everything you need to get through your day (and the occasional late night) at the office.

Whether you work in New York City or have office space near Boston, we’ve compiled a universal list of those essential items that every office desk needs.

Must-Have Items for Every Office Desk

  1. To-Do List

Sure you’ve probably got access to all your projects and appointments online, but a printed list of action items is a great way to stay on task. In fact, setting aside 10 minutes at the end of each day to make your to-do list for the following morning is even better. Check your calendar for appointments and jot those down, too. This allows you start each work day with a clear list of goals and commitments.

  1. Phone Charger

Is there anything more frustrating than a phone battery on the verge of dying? How are you supposed to check your Facebook feed at lunch, or survive the commute home without your playlist? Of course, if you rely on your phone for client or colleague contact, a full battery is even more imperative. Keep a spare charger in your desk, and save yourself the inconvenience.

  1. Water Bottle

Water isn’t just an office essential, it’s a life essential! But we emphasize the importance here, because offices tend to be extra dry. In addition to affecting your hair, skin and eyes, dehydration leads to brain fog and the inability to think clearly. So the next time you’re feeling a bit sluggish, skip the coffee and drink more water.

  1. Snacks

Birthday cake in the conference room, donuts in the kitchen, candy at reception – it can all be rather tempting, especially when stress is high and your stomach is growling. Toss some granola bars or almonds in your desk for those afternoon cravings. Bring in a box of instant oatmeal for the mornings when you skip breakfast at home, and keep a can of soup and saltines handy for those working lunches.

  1. Breath Mints

You just downed a salad covered in onions and your boss stops by for an impromptu chat. Quick, grab a breath mint! Whether you work with close talkers or not, it’s always a good idea to keep mints handy. Gum works, too, but only if you know how to chew discreetly and can resist the urge to pop, snap and blow bubbles.

  1. Tissues

Spare yourself the embarrassment of a messy sneeze, and keep a box of tissues on your desk. Not just during cold and flu season, but all year long. While they’re not as absorbent as a paper towel, tissues can also clean up small spills in a pinch, buying you time to find the real cleaning supplies before your keyboard is compromised.

  1. Antibacterial Wipes

Speaking of cold and flu season, a private stash of antibacterial wipes is the key to avoiding the latest office bug. This is especially true if your share your desk or phone with other colleagues. Hand sanitizer is also key if you shake hands often or work in an office that transfers a lot of paper.

  1. Stain Remover

It’s happened to everybody at some point. You spill coffee on your tie, dribble ketchup down your shirt or sit in some chocolate. Accident prone colleagues have been known to keep spare clothes at the office, but a simple stain stick will usually do the trick. Keep one in your desk drawer for those inescapable food mishaps.

  1. Personal Care Products

Whether it’s for transitioning from work to happy hour or sprucing up after a walk at lunch, having some basic hygiene products handy is helpful for freshening up. Think deodorant, hair brush, baby wipes and mouthwash. A bottle of aspirin or ibuprofen is a good idea, too.
