With winter just around the corner and COVID-19 cases on the rise again in most regions throughout the country, cleanliness and sanitation are top of mind for most people, whether they are still working remotely or they’ve returned to the office.

But with full schedules and the hustle and bustle of the holidays upon us as well, time is of the essence! Most people don’t have time for a full deep-clean of their workspace on a daily basis.

Still, just because you can’t feasibly scour every surface in painstaking detail to eliminate germs and bacteria daily doesn’t mean you should give up and let germs take over! There are a number of really effective cleaning tasks you can do in just a few minutes each day that can make a difference!

5 Easy 5-Minute Workspace Cleaning Tactics

Choose one of these options (or do all five in less than half an hour) and your workspace will be in better shape when it comes to germs and general cleanliness!

  1. Wipe Down Your Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse & Phone

It will only take a couple of minutes (if that!) to wipe down the main surfaces you touch at your desk during the day – including your screen, keyboard, mouse, and phone. Even wiping down writing utensils can be a good idea.

Despite being quick, this effort can be effective when it comes to stopping germs in their tracks!

  1. Vacuum or Mop Under Your Desk

During the winter, you likely track in dirt, slush, water, salt, and other debris on your shoes and boots – but you may also be tracking germs into your workspace as well. As such, it’s a good idea to take a few minutes every once in a while to clean underneath your desk.

A quick vacuum or mopping session (or a combo of the two) should get the job done. As an added bonus, you might be surprised by how much better it feels to work at your desk without dirt and debris crunching under your feet all day!

  1. Sanitize Your Desktop, Door Knobs and Light Switches

High touch surfaces – especially those that are shared – can be breeding grounds for some pretty nasty bacteria. Not surprisingly, these are some of the key surfaces it’s a good idea to focus on whether you’re doing a quick clean or a deep clean of your office space.

Paper towels and some disinfecting spray work great, but disinfecting wipes are a great tool to make this task even easier and faster. Just grab a couple and go, and you’ll get rid of lingering germs in just a minute or two.

  1. File, Discard or Shred Paperwork

Paperwork tends to pile up because taking care of it often requires reviewing it and that takes time. If you have papers piling up and cluttering your office space, set aside a few minutes a few times a week to make a dent in dealing with it.

Getting rid of unnecessary papers can help you literally throw away additional surfaces that can collect germs in your office, and will ultimately neaten your workspace, making it easier to clean.

  1. Clear Away Clutter

Take a few minutes now and again to do a little bit of general clean up in your workspace. This includes things like putting away files you’ve left out, putting coffee mugs, cups, bowls and plates in the dishwasher, emptying old food out of the office fridge, etc. It can also include replacing empty tissue boxes and refilling cleaning supplies as needed, in order to keep the office well stocked, especially when heading into cold and flu season.

Clearing up clutter is one quick and easy way you can help to keep germs at bay (benefitting your physical health) while also keeping your office neat and tidy (which has been shown to provide mental health benefits).

Keep Your Workspace Clean in Just 5 Minutes a Day

You don’t have to set aside a ton of time to keeping your office clean if you’re able to dedicate a few minutes regularly to tackle the tasks listed above. Of course, an in-depth office cleaning once in a while won’t hurt – but these strategies can help keep things in good shape on a day-to-day basis.

Heading into cold and flu season, it’s especially important to keep these cleaning tips top of mind – and at the top of your priority list. You can check out some of our other workspace cleaning tips here
